Temporary Protection Visa Holders: Meeting the Challenge

South Australia is, like other States and Territories, dealing with the unexpected arrival of many TPV holders. In order to have a coordinated approach across government and non government agencies, the Department of Human Services formed in May 2000 an TPV Interagency Strategy Group. This group meets fortnightly and work to date has been described by the Refugee Council of Australia as the most advanced in terms of coordinating support for the new TPV arrivals.

The paper for this conference will detail the background to this initiative, how it operates and the lessons learned to date.

Albert Barelds is presently Manager, Multicultural & Equity Strategies in the Strategic Planning & Policy Division of DHS. He is, within DHS, the first point of contact for the Department of Immigration & Multicultural Affairs in relation to the arrival of TPV holders. He has been involved in both policy development and service planning for the TPV holders in SA and chairs the TPV Interagency Strategy.
