Hybridizing Identity
Abstract
Basically, the proposal will be put that the existing definitions
of what constitutes "Greekness" should be examined
from the point of who constructs them and why. These views may
indeed need to be broader than we permit ourselves in Australia
currently. This position will be argued from the perspective
of active experiences through literature and specifically dramatic
texts. Some of these texts may be Greek-Australian generated
and others belong to the canon of Greek literary history. "Inclusivity"
may mean embracing international developments in Greek literature
and performance. Promoting the image of contemporary Greek themes
may mean employing the media/marketing strategies of "mainstream"
agencies. The "Cultural Activism" coined by Peter Sellars
may mean more organised strategies become necessary when profiling
identity. What are the implications culturally and economically
of these proposals?
