Blunting the Impact: Developing Ethnically Sensitive Responses to Reduce Weapon Carrying and Youth Violence

Abstract
This paper is based on findings from a larger study of adolescent weapon carrying in Victoria and has two primary objectives.
First, it aims to deconstruct the perception that certain groups of ethnic minority young people are more likely to carry and use weapons than others.
Second, it provides a conceptual framework for local governments who are seeking to better understand and respond to the issue of weapon carrying and youth violence. Challenges associated with implementing violence prevention and reduction strategies in culturally diverse communities are also
discussed.
